Cloud deployment is set to grow by 18 percent this year, according to an IDC forecast. And if those staggering statistics don’t convince you to make the move, maybe IBM’s $64 million cloud-building contract with the United States will sway you.

A new forecast by IDC projects total spending on IT infrastructure for deployment in cloud environments will increase by a whopping 18.2 percent in 2017 – that’s an estimated $44.2 billion USD.

The stats validate what we’ve known for a while now: the cloud offers enterprises unparalleled modern, high-performance efficiency in a secure environment. Enterprises that haven’t already integrated are realizing that waiting is only going to slow them down further – so it looks like 2017 is the year we’re going to see rapid deployment.

But if these double-digit increases don’t convince you the cloud is now, not the future – maybe the U.S. government’s estimated $64 million investment in cloud infrastructure via IBM will. The technology company has been contracted to build a secure private cloud on one of the country’s missile arsenals in Alabama – they’ll also offer the government additional security and IaaS. “With this project, we’re beginning to bring the IT infrastructure of the U.S. Army into the 21st century,” Lt. Gen. Robert Ferrell, US Army CIO said, according to Light Reading.

Now, while the structural and security needs of the U.S. government obviously differ from that of the private sector, the contract illustrates the important elements cloud infrastructure can provide today – like modernization, rapid computing power, easier application deployment and security.

The on-premise cloud that’s being built for the United States is also part of what IDC forecasts as a rapidly growing sector of the cloud – estimating that on-premise private cloud will grow at 13.9% over the next few years, leaving spending on non-cloud IT infrastructure in the dust by 2020.
